AP-FECM won the “Global Competition on Best Practices in Forest Education – Top 2
On 21 March (International Day of Forests), the International Union of Forest Research Organization (IUFRO) announced that the Asia-Pacific Forest Education Coordination Mechanism (AP-FECM) had won the “Global Competition on Best Practices in Forest Education – Top 2”.
The Global Competition on Best Practices in Forest Education provides excellent examples of world-class methods and practices in forest education across many schools and institutions. A total of 71 schools and institution from 23 economies from all continents participated in the competition. The AP-FECM has been recognized for its outstanding work on the “Innovative Sustainable Forest Management Education in the Asia-Pacific Region” programme in the category of tertiary education. This programme, supported by APFNet, includes a global online community platform, award-winning online courses, the use of emerging technology, and an effective team-based model for course development and operations. There are currently five free Massive Open Online Courses (MOOC) that can be accessed at http://apfecm.forestry.ubc.ca/sfm-online-courses/ and ten more courses are in development. The courses will be adopted on the world’s leading online course platform – edX Edge – which uses MOOC standards, and this project will also make efforts to increase equity in forest education by providing more open educational resources and credential programmes (Certificate and Master’s degree) for global learners.
The AP-FECM was initiated by APFNet. It comprises 58 member organizations and its executive office is located at the University of British Columbia’s Faculty of Forestry. The AP-FECM is an innovative networking programme that embraces many higher education institutes over an extensive geographical area. The programme has been leading online education with MOOC courses and is exceptionally active at developing forest higher education curricula.

Leading experts from seven distinguished forestry faculties, partner agencies of the project, discussing new course development.
A total of 3,300 users have already been attracted and 37,000 views from 91 economies have been received by the forestry online courses developed from Phase I of the project.
