A workshop on the Role of Forest Resource Management in GMS was launched on 11 July 2012, in Kunming China, which jointly sponsored and organized by APFNet and the Mekong Institute (MI), in collaboration with Southwest Forestry University (SWFU) and Yunan Academy of Biodiversity (YAB). This workshop is the second workshop towards GMS supported by APFNet since 2010, serving as an efficient platform for information sharing and recommendation for the development of APFNet demonstration projects in GMS.

The opening ceremony was chaired by Professor Li Yonghe, YAB president, and the welcome remarks were delivered by Mr. Jin Puchun, Director General of International Cooperation Department State Forestry Administration, Mr. Lu De, Assistant Executive Director of APFNet Secretariats, Prof. Chen Baokun, Chair of the SWFU Board Directors, Mr. Jin chen, Director of International Regional Cooperation Office of Yunnan Province and Prof. Wang Zehua, MI China Coordinator, appreciating the broad participation in this valuable activity and wishing a success of the training workshop.

Bringing together 25 forestry officials and researchers from 6 economies including Cambodia, China, Myanmar, Laos, Thailand and Viet Nam, the workshop is focused on the challenges facing GMS economies in terms of the sustainable management and use of forest resource to improve watershed management. Thematic Lectures and case studies will be given by resource persons from FAO, IMFN, and Jawaharlal Nehru University etc. In addition, reports submitted by participants will be presented as a basis for in-depth exchange of forest resources management through case studies and measures in various conditions.

A field trip to Puer County in Yunnan Province will be organized in the latter part of the workshop to showcase the performance and experiences of forest resources management at local level.
