Three-quarters of US wood pellet exports go to UK

28 April 2015, HD FestForest news - New statistics show the UK is the destination for 75 per cent of US wood pellet exports. According to the US Energy Information Administration, the main driver of this demand was for use of the resource in electricity generation.

The organisation revealed total wood pellet exports increased by 40 per cent year on year in 2014, rising from 3.2 million tonnes to 4.4 million tonnes.

Such growth has allowed the US to maintain its position as the leading exporter of the resource, having surpassed Canada in 2012.

The European Commission's 2020 climate and energy plan was highlighted as a driving force in increasing wood pellet demand across Europe, as nations look to reduce their harmful emissions and increase renewable energy use.

In the UK, 15 per cent of energy demand must be met by renewable sources by 2020.
