7 March 2014, IISD news - Suriname has announced its accession to the International Tropical Timber Agreement, 2006 (ITTA, 2006), becoming the 68th Party to join the Agreement, which is focused on ensuring the sustainable management of tropical timber.According to the International Tropical Timber Organization (ITTO), Suriname includes 14.8 million hectares of forest, a majority of which is dry highland forest. This forest is comprised of more than 600 different tree species, although Qualea species and Dicorynia guianensis are the most commonly harvested.

As of 2010, Suriname contained 68 forest concessions covering 1.22 million hectares, representing less than 10 percent of the total forest cover. Most of Suriname's forests are intact and contain significant carbon stocks and important biodiversity resources.
