Guatemala works to improve forest governance through consultations and capacity-building

6 March 2014, EU FLEGT Facility news - The Guatemalan forest authority Instituto Nacional de Bosques (INAB) has launched a project designed to improve governance.

The project got underway in February and involves consultations with local stakeholders to discuss the pertinence and viability of FLEGT and related initiatives in the country.
One of the main project activities is updating the ‘Inter-institutional action plan to prevent and reduce illegal logging’, which INAB set up in 2010 in collaboration with local actors with the aim of improving the traceability, verification and monitoring of forest products. To this end, INAB aims to strengthen the multistakeholder platform formed for the action plan by building members’ capacity. In addition, technical divisions within INAB will receive training on implementing the action plan with the participation of all stakeholders.
Other activities under the new project are assessing the degree of illegality in the forest sector and timber trade in the country; strengthening verification, monitoring and control systems; increasing awareness about FLEGT; and developing a system to effectively monitor and evaluate the project, including assessing lessons learnt. The project is funded through the EU FAO FLEGT Programme.
