Sino–ASEAN Network of Forestry Research Institutes(SANFRI)
Home / Capacity Building / Sino–ASEAN Network of Forestry Research Institutes(SANFRI)

Research matters to forests and forestry since it builds knowledge, informs solutions, and supports the capacity building of researchers and scientists, and the application of research results undoubtedly contributes to regional forestry developments.

APFNet initiated an Early Career Academics Program in 2016, which was upgraded to the Sino–ASEAN Network of Forestry Research Institutes(SANFRI) two years later. SANFRI aims to enhance forestry research in ASEAN economies and China through information exchange, capacity development, and joint research actions.

Young Scholar Team and Early Career Academics Forum
The Early Career Academics Forum provides a platform for sharing information about forestry-related research and facilitating a learning process among the Young Scholar Team of SANFRI(YST), which is composed of 24 young researcher representatives recommended by SANFRI member institutes. The Forums are usually held back-to- back with the Steering Committee Meetings and are exclusively open to YST researchers.
Meeting participants are expected to share
New developments in the regional forestry research
Innovation and breakthrough of their institutes
Progress and/or new ideas about their research fields
to foster mutual learning, increase research capacity, and strengthen cooperation.

Small Research Grant
The APFNet Small Research Grant, started in 2020, encourages and supports young forestry professionals of SANFRI member institutes in translating their innovative research ideas into practice. The Grant applicants' scope is currently exclusive to the SANFRI young scholar team members.

Upon Call for application every two years, research proposals are reviewed by the SANFRI Steering Committee and an expert panel and approved by APFNet for funding of up to USD 15,000 for each winner proposal. Relevance to the regional forestry development agenda and APFNet's current strategic plan are mainly considered for proposal review. Joint proposals are encouraged to enhance collaboration among SANFRI members. All the grant receivers conduct research under guidance, progress checks, and final technical evaluations.
