Remote Sensing Training Workshop on Forest Cover and Carbon Mapping in the Great

1

A four-day training workshop on Forest Cover and Carbon Mapping in the Greater Mekong Subregion and Malaysia, was held in Vientiane, Laos on 5-8 June 2012, bringing together 31 experts and officials from Cambodia, China, Laos, Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam.

The workshop mainly focused on the discussion of technical route of forest cover and carbon mapping based on ICESat/GLAS, Landsat TMand other multi-spectral remote sensing data. During the workshop, an exercise session of forest type classification and space-borne LIDAR data based on open source remote sensing data processingsoftwarewas conducted by the invited experts from the region.Aone-day field trip to Sangthong after the workshop was organized to demonstrate technical approach of field data measurement concerning the estimation of forest above ground biomass.

Thisworkshop is one of the key activities of APFNet- funded project Forest Cover and Carbon Mapping in the Greater Mekong Subregion and Malaysia. The project is expected toestimate forest cover and carbon mapping from 2005-2010 in the GMS and Malaysia at different resolutions by adopting remote sensing techniques.
