With an aim to support UNFF on its 9th Session and the International Year of Forests in 2011, a major group-led initiative workshop, entitled “Applying Sustainable Forest Management to Poverty Reduction” was held from 26-30 July, 2010 in Accra, Ghana. The event was coordinated by ICA International and hosted by the Government of Ghana. Representatives from Major Groups under UNFF were extensively invited to the workshop.
The workshop was started with the opening ceremony, where distinguished invitees delivered welcome remarks and keynote speeches. Ms. Jan McAlpine, director of UNFF Secretariat, expected remarkable contribution of MGI to be made to the upcoming UNFF session and introduced activities in plan for celebrating IYF 2011.
The workshop program featured plenary sessions and group discussions, providing with informal occasion for sharing experience and lessons learned among multi-stakeholders gained in process of promoting SFM to poverty reduction and relevant fields. Productive recommendations were concluded for UNFF9 and a workshop communiqué was issued and joint activities for the International Year of Forests in 2011 were planned.
A field trip was organized during the workshop to Kakum National Park and Center for Scientific Research into Plant Medicine, to showcase the efforts of Ghana made in diversity protection and NTFPs to promote SFM.
