Since its launch in September 2008, APFNet has made strides in over six years, from an initiative to an action-oriented regional organization dedicated to promoting sustainable forest management in the Asia-Pacific region. More than 20 demonstration projects have been launched, 50 APFNet scholarship students got the opportunities to pursue Master’s degree in forestry, over 200 forestry officials received on-the-job training through APFNet’s thematic workshops, and the regional commitment to forestry has also been strengthened through high level policy dialogues supported by APFNet.

All those achievements are indispensable from the continuous support from APFNet Members via the working mechanism of focal points and Interim Steering Committee during the transitional period. The Interim Steering Committee has provided important advice for major development issues of APFNet, and the focal points have been quite helpful in the implementation of APFNet’s programs and activities. As the development of APFNet further advances, it is necessary to establish the permanent governance structure of APFNet. Under the auspices of the Interim Steering Committee and the Focal Points meeting in May 2014 in Chiang Mai, Thailand, the Plan of Establishing the Council of APFNet was finalized in August 2014 and carried out later the year, preparing APFNet for the change.

Incorporating the Interim Steering Committee and Focal Points Mechanism, the Council shall carry forward the roles and responsibilities of the two organs as an advisory body for APFNet and a forum of exchange for Members, who can discuss emerging forestry related issues in the region and advise APFNet to implement programs better reflecting the forestry development needs of the region.

In collaboration with the Ministry of Environmental Conservation and Forestry (MOECAF) of Myanmar, the First Meeting of the APFNet Council will be held to mark the milestone of APFNet’s institutional development and gather insights from Members to better shape the future of the organization and contribute to the cause of forestry development in the region.
