Background

Sustainable forest management (SFM) is important for green growth. National forestry strategic plans, reflecting the forestry development situation, future directions and relevant supporting policies and interventions, play a critical role in sustainable forestry management. In the context of global challenges, such as climate change, ecosystem degradation, natural resources shortage, energy crisis, food security etc, economies in the Asia-Pacific region are in the process of reviewing and adjusting their Forestry Strategic Plans to adapt to and address global change.

To facilitate the process of review and adjustment of Forestry Strategic Plans, APFNet and FAO will co-organize a “Workshop on Forestry Strategic Planning in the Asia-Pacific Region” in Rotorua, New Zealand on November 3rd, 2013, as a pre-session event of the 25th session of the Asia-Pacific Forestry Commission (APFC). The preliminary agenda for the workshop is in Annex 1.

Objectives

  1. The specific objectives of the workshop are as follows:
  2. To review current national forestry strategic planning and implementation;
  3. To identify gaps and key challenges for forestry strategic plan development and implementation;
  4. To share experiences and lessons learned in the process of development and implementation of national forestry strategic plans; and
  5. To establish an effective communication and information sharing mechanism to promote development and implementation of national forestry strategic plans.

Expected Outputs

  1. Updated status on national strategic planning and implementation among economies ;
  2. Identification of major gaps and key challenges in addressing the needs for forestry strategic plan development and implementation;
  3. A proposal for establishing a regional dialogue on national forestry strategic planning in the region.

Participants

Approximately 30-50 participants including government officials and experts who are engaged in forestry strategic planning in the region.

Venue and Timing

One day workshop will be held in Rotorua, New Zealand on November 3rd , 2013 as a pre-session event of the 25th session of the Asia-Pacific Forestry Commission (APFC).

Visa

Participants are responsible for their visa application. Please follow the relevant policies of New Zealand and information on APFC website (www.apfc2013.org.nz). To facilitate the visa process, participants are encouraged to join APFC delegation in your economy.

Financial Support

Limited numbers of participants from developing economies and invited resource person will be supported according to funding availability. Pleases note that only the participants receive the funding confirmation from APFNet will be supported.

Registration

Please fill in the registration form (Annex 2) and return it to APFNet no later than 30th September, 2013. At the same time, you also need to register on APFC website (www.apfc2013.org.nz) as earlier as possible.
