Background

It is the mission of Asia-Pacific Network for Sustainable Forest Management and Rehabilitation (APFNet) to promote sustainable forest management and rehabilitation in Asia-Pacific Region. The Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS) is rich in forest resources and sustainable forest management plays an important role in social and economic development, especially in rural development and improvement of livelihood in the subregion. However, with the rapid population growth and multiple demands on forests from society, forest conservation and management faces increasing challenges in the subregion. These include the increasing demand for forest products and services, the growing competition for forests and forest lands, the urgent need for poverty reduction, effective biodiversity conservation, and forest law enforcement and governance.

Through the cooperation with forest sectors of the subregion, APFNet makes efforts to promote and improve sustainable forest management and rehabilitation, improve the livelihood of forest-dependent communities, mitigate global warming by reducing carbon emissions and increase carbon sequestration, which will ultimately contribute to the sustainable development of society, economy and environment in the subregion.
