Background

The Asia‐Pacific region comprising of 47 countries and home to more than half of the world population, has nearly 19 percent (over 734 million ha) of world forest area (FAO, 2009). Over 5 million people are employed in forestry sector of Asia‐Pacific region. Providing formal and informal training to strengthen the capacity of the workforce for sustainable forest management in Asia‐Pacific
region plays a significant role of forestry training institutions in the region.

Forestry education around the world is facing serious challenges related to declining enrolment in forestry universities, curricula issues, and often aggravated by the outdated qualifications of forestry graduates. And forestry colleges/universities, as a major force of providing with forestry education in this region, also face some practical problems, such as curriculum design combined
with the changing demands of the society, a lack of information sharing both on forestry education and international forestry issues, inadequacy of the updating teaching materials and resources, declining enrolment and continuing loss of job
opportunities for graduates.

In this regard, the Forestry College Deans Meeting in Asia‐Pacific Region sponsored by Asia‐Pacific Network for Sustainable Forest Management and Rehabilitation(APFNet) in collaboration with Beijing Forestry University(BJFU) and
TNC/RAFT Program, will be held on July 21‐23, 2010 Beijing, to address these problems for promoting sustainable forest management in this region.

Objectives and expected outcomes

  1. A better understanding of the existing problems of forestry education towards sustainable forest management in this region;
  2. Identification of the key strengths and weaknesses of forestry colleges/universities in the region and a prioritized set of actions to improve curriculum development, such as how to strengthen the field‐training part; how to apply innovative SFM theory and technology into practice;
  3. Discussion on the possibility of establishment of the Forest College Deans Meeting Mechanism ;
  4. Recommendations on “Curriculum Development Strategy and Action Plan for Sustainable Forest Management” for the Asia‐Pacific Region.

Participants

The meeting will bring together deans of forestry colleges/universities, experts from forestry training institutions and regional forestry organizations in Asia‐Pacific region.

Language

This meeting will be conducted in both English and Chinese with simultaneous interpretation.
